First, the Weber grill cooking box is extremely well made. Putting it together takes some time and honestly when I started to put the cabinet frame together, I kept saying, "Really?? Plastic clips for the panels?"
I’ll start with a review of the frame. The frame uses actual screws so that part was sturdy. The panels that cover the frame however, well those use push in plastic clips. It made putting the panels on the frame easy, but I would have rather of had bolts and nuts to install those parts. I can just see the plastic clips becoming brittle after consistent heating and cooling, but we will see what happens. I haven’t heard of anyone really having to replace those, but again this is a $1200 grill so why did Weber go so cheap on the parts. Using bolts and nuts would have just elevated this to a more substantial build. Comparing it to my old Kenmore, the Kenmore base was so well built that in over 17 years, even with flare ups, the cabinet base was still rock solid. This cabinet base doesn't seem to be as well made as the old Kenmore, especially with the plastic clips. However, once it is put together it is quite solid and remarkably sturdy, not to mention it looks really good, I'll talk about the cooking later.
The front panel- that was actually pretty interesting to put together. It wasn't quite what I expected but once everything was assembled, I just had to route the wires to the control panel box inside of the cabinet. On this, I believe an older Weber model had a wire tie that attached to the frame so you could secure all the wires neatly. The newer model doesn't have that, so I added the wire tie (I used a Velcro strap) to bind the wires, no biggie there but still not sure why they didn't add that to the parts or why they removed it from the current models.
The cooking: It has a sear section. So awesome. I tried this with a pretty thick steak and the sear marks were perfect. Not one flare up, perfect grilling...just perfect.
Chicken, hamburgers, steak- all perfectly cooked. On my old Kenmore, even though it was built incredibly well, it never compared to the Weber in terms of cooking. In fact, the Weber hasn't had one single flare up, even with brats. No flare ups, even distribution of heat, and the way the grill box is made it appears to hold in the heat and doesn't lose it through vents like other grills. There are no "hot spots" that make cooking unpredictable, rather everything is evenly cooked no matter where on the grill you place it, except for the sear section when you turn that on.
Customer service: The grill came with a damaged lid. Part of the lid had scratches on it. I called Weber the day I opened the grill and they sent out a new lid which I received a few days later at no cost.
Weber rocks.
Overall: Expensive, but then again I expect this to last for as long as my old Kenmore so I believe it is worth it. The cooking is amazing- perfect grilling every time. Sear section is excellent.
I added a rotisserie. There are several out there but I found the Weber version for this model at a HUGE discount on Amazon and added it to the grill. Cooked two chickens to perfection, even with the temp outside being somewhat cold. Again, the design of the grill box is such that it retains the heat and distributes it evenly although you can do indirect heat by selecting specific burners to use, so it is that versatile.
Build Quality
The grill is extremely solid, none of that wobbly/shakey cheap-grill feel. The thing is well-built, solid, and made in the US. The lid is firm and heavy, and opens and closes smoothly as you'd expect. The burner lighting system works perfectly, lighting each burner immediately each time I use it, without having to keep trying and wondering if you're going to blow yourself up (like on cheaper grills). The grill "tub" is a single piece of solid cast metal, that won't crack or rust like cheap grills. It also makes for easy maintenance and cleaning (more on that later).
Cooking
The cooking experience is perfection... the grill has enough temperature control to easily maintain a 225F indirect zone for long slow cooking (ribs), and the incredible sear burner can allow for instant searing of items. For example, when making perfect steaks using a reverse sear method (cook the steak indirect at 225F until the whole steak is ~110 from edge to edge, then blast each side with head to give it a crust without overcooking the inside at all, resulting in perfectly tender juicy medium-rare steak), the sear burner nearly instantly gives enough heat to give the steaks a serious sear! It's amazing! You couldn't do this on an inferior grill without this heat capacity. Because of this fine temperature control, I have smoked many things in this grill. Yes, no need for a dedicated smoker! Simply use a smoker box (or just throw wood chunks right in there) with wood chips on high heat until they begin to release blue fragrant smoke, then adjust the burners to your desired ambient cooking temperature, and add the food. Fall off the bone juicy ribs with a dry rub and some smoke are marvelous. Even just simple burgers taste better on this grill because of it's features and control.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Cleaning the grill is extremely easy... Pull out the grease management tray, scrape it down using a plastic putty knife into the trash, and empty the catch pan. It's so easy to clean, that it can be done quickly after each cooking session if needed. Deep cleans are easy too, since the "flavorizer" bars can simply be scraped off with a plastic putty knife, along with the cast grill basin. It all funnels down into the catch pans. Even the burners themselves are so solid and well built that you can clean them safely with a wire brush (if needed). This is the easiest grill I've ever cleaned.
So, get yourself a set of plastic putty knives for $3 at your local hardware store or right here on Amazon, and a good grill scraper like Char-Gone, and that should be all the maintenance tools you'll need.
Customer Service
Incredible. Call their 1-800 number, and you get a human on the line right away. Someone that knows and loves Weber products, and loves grilling. I called them before ordering anything, just to compare a few of the options, and they clearly and thoroughly explained it to me, resulting in an easy purchase. After setting it up, I called again to ask a few questions about operation and features, and had a fantastic experience. In addition, there was a slight issue with assembly (the free assembly guy missed connecting the side burner igniter), and support immediately diagnosed the issue, walked me through the easy repair, and even sent me some replacement screws because I clumsily dropped them during the process. Perfect support experience!
Conclusion
This grill is an investment, one that is very much worth it. It'll last a long time (I've known other Genesis owners that have used their Genesis grills for over 15 years), and it has consistently given me excellent food after a month of near-daily use. I have nothing bad to say about this grill, and have no regrets!
Top reviews from other countries
It's pretty good. I won't go through the effort to return it but I am not thrilled. But I do like it. Mainly.
Pros: I like the grates, I like the lighting, I light the top. It heats up very quickly and collects the grease so less flame ups, better cooking. Overall, good for the actual BBQ function.
Cons: Assembly was too time consuming + a lot of plastic fasteners, which prevent rattling but again, the Summit seems more welded together. You cannot store a spare tank and the tank is outside, which works less well in the winter. Not all of it is stainless steel: true plastics have improved, but it's Canada guys.
My last one had a stainless steel rotisserie which I used precisely 0 times.
My last one had BETTER stainless steel and lasted ages (16 years) but I didn't feel like changing the hoses etc. which were available. But is wasn't as good a grill.
Anyway, I chose it. It's a good grill. But let's curb the hyperbole.
